Alex is a foodie who loves photography that launched his Instagram page after gaining inspiration from an unlikely source - the Prime Minister of Singapore, PM Lee. Upon hearing that PM Lee himself had an account on Instagram, Alex turned his attention to the platform and found it suited his needs to showcase food photography. It was a smart move as Alex was already posting on Facebook and diversifying his reach has helped tremendously.
When you started, did you create an elaborate plan or was it very casual?
The first aim was to display the food that I enjoyed. As I was exposed to more IG accounts, I realised that there are too many cafe hoppers, I didn’t have a sweet tooth and unable to compete with them for content. Hence, I focus on fine dining and restaurants for content.
Do you have any inspirations you look to for your content?
@bibikgourmand for her food, fine dining & travel articles. @david_yip for his knowledge in food both local and overseas. @little_meg_siu_meg for her HK & Japanese dining experiences.
What are your top 3 favourite dishes and which place served it best?
1. Japanese Omakase - Akane San from Sushi Kimura
2. Sushi Omakase - Chef Gary from Hakumai Sushi & Omakase
3. Italian - Gattopardo
If there were a dish that was your nemesis on this food journey, what would it be?
Insects, any form of insects.
What advice do you have for those who might want to start food blogging or Instagramming?
Always remember: Getting famous on Instagram is like getter rich in Monopoly. Unless you can monetise your work, IG is always a fun app.
Where can people find out more about you?
My IG account @sqtop is also my food Journal. It is a good place to start. Thank you to everyone for every opportunity given to me, while I am growing my IG account.
