Aug 25, 2019

The Widely Debated (TWD) is a series where we attempt to settle once and for all the most widely debated topics about food (from the best place for brunch to the best chicken rice) by doing what we do best at Munch – scouring the internet and putting together all the opinions from our content partners to give you the best answer. Ready? Let's go!

If you are a frequent reader of food blogs, or one who procrastinates planning for your brunch dates, you are sure to have encountered at least 15 food blogs attempting to list the best places you should go for brunch, each recommending you a different place you must try. While this article might not be any different from the 15 posts you've read on brunch places, we have tried our best to lay down the top 3 place you must go (and definitely have already heard of), before concluding with the winner for this round of debate.

First Contestant: Lola's Cafe

Founded around the period of the cafe rush of 2011, Lola's Cafe has since served heartlanders and hipsters alike in their quaint cafe tucked away in the neighbourhood of Kovan, just around the corner of the famous Punggol Nasi Lemak.

Lola's cafe has stood the test of time and has emerged as one of the top brunch places in the minds of cafe-goers, not only in terms of their menu, but also the experience they have provided their customers. Serving honest and simple comfort food at an affordable price, they have garnered fantastic reviews from the community throughout the years – a testament to their emphasis in consistent quality.

Our partner seconds this opinion and said that "they'd made some good tastes out of simple elements in some of their dishes here at Lola's".

"On this single toasted brioche was pesto sauce and sautéed mushrooms with poached eggs, and it tasted wonderful. Also liked the crunchy texture they'd added with some cereal and pickled radish."

Not forgetting their signature Lola's Breakfast, which @with.rachelle described it to be "filled with toast, scrambled, bacon, pork sausage and a garden salad. Their scrambled egg is good! It’s a lil runny and fluffy!"

Besides savoury picks, they also offer a wide range of desserts that are now a staple for their regular customers. @crystal_wee raved about their Lemon Meringue Tart and Honey Panna Cotta, mentioning that "both are equally good homemade desserts with equally tempting counterparts on the menu such as earl grey tart, dark chocolate sea salt tart and wasabi white chocolate mousse."

Still the go-to for brunch dates up till today, Lola's Cafe has grown from a young cafe to a brunch classic. They undoubtedly stand out from the crowd of cafes to be one of the contenders for the crown of the Best Brunch Place in Singapore.

Second Contender: PS.Cafe

With 8 outlets under its belt, PS.Cafe needs no introduction as it is one of the most well-known brunch destinations among Singaporeans. While there are some differences in the menu across the outlets, the quality of food they serve across the board is top notch, and as City Nomad described, "it has stood the test of time by virtue of its excellent service and consistent quality."

PS.Cafe is known to be the restaurant that introduced Singaporeans to the concept of truffle fries, and is often flocked with customers who just can't get enough. @foodmakescalhappy is one of the lovers of their Truffle Shoestring Fries, and excitedly claims that it is a must-have at PS.Cafe. He describes it as "crispy, thin cut fries drizzled with truffle oil, topped with generous amt of parmesan cheese, like snow on a potato mountain. Tastes great & smells amazing."

PS.Cafe brands itself as a sophisticated cafe brand that aims to bring out the charm of European cafes from the colonial era, which explains the variety and depth of flavour it serves on its menu. If you are looking for a place to relax on a weekend, City Nomad recommends the Ann Siang Hill outlet, where you can enjoy "crowd favourites which include the PS. Club (roast turkey, bacon, chicken, fried egg, cheddar) and the brunch staple Croque Monsieur (Smoked ham, Montreux gruyère, rustic bread), both of which pair well with their homemade juices."

Although PS Cafe is not confined to only brunches (in fact, they serve food from brunch all the way to late-night drinks!), it is hard to resist listing them as one of the contenders for the debate, especially since it has been serving pretty and delicious food since 1999.

Third Contender: Common Man Coffee Roasters

Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR) is the brain child of Harry Grover of Forty Hands and Five Senses Coffee from Australia, and is the last, but definitely not the least, of the three contenders for this round of TWD.

Nestled in the heart of the River Valley District, Rubbish Eat Rubbish Grow describes CMCR to be a cafe with a strange decor (read: a cock as the center piece for the restaurant), but great brunch food and coffee. "The coffee beans are roasted daily here. My mocha was as beautiful as it was perfect. It wasn’t full-bodied but was subtle, silky, and smooth. No bitterness from the coffee at all. In most places, the chocolate acts as a sweetener but here, the coffee was full of the chocolate aroma but the chocolate was just an undertone, a supplement and not a main player. A spiced aftertaste made the cuppa irresistible and addictive. Easily the best mocha in Singapore."

CMCR also serves a perfect plate of Organic Eggs Benedict, as @kenpgl recalls how he was "filled with indescribable glee as (he) was greeted by the avalanche of glistening and lustrous rockets. However, the real gem was hidden below the heap of green loveliness. The braised ox cheeks are so lusciously soft and flavorsome that I made a beeline for it upon stumbling on the 'treasure' beneath the dense 'vegetation'"

CMCR presents its customer with an interesting yet delectable brunch experience. Topped off with the rich background in cafe culinary and coffee know-how of its founder, it is no wonder CMCR is such a hit among the community of brunch-lovers. I guess the Common Man isn't so common after all.
